SuperNoVa Select is a traveling girls lacrosse club. Liz Schaffner, former 10 year Assistant Coach at George Mason University, created SuperNoVa Select in an effort to foster the growth of girls lacrosse in Northern Virginia while helping high school players gain exposure to the college recruiters.
There will be a tryout for all players at the beginning of every season. Tryouts will occur in the month of August. Players are evaluated on their athleticism, lacrosse skills and coachability.
Travel and hotel arrangements are the responsibility of each player and their family. Hotel blocks will be secured by Liz for tournaments that are farther away. Some of the bigger tournaments do require teams to stay in the team hotel. Specific instructions for each tournament will be emailed to teams in advance for planning purposes. Supervision of athletes while traveling is the responsibility of each individual family.
As the director of the SuperNoVa Select program, Liz takes on all the administrative duties while also overseeing the progress of the athletes at the practices as well as the tournaments. Each team will have a head coach and an assistant coach. The coaches are either local college coaches or Northern Virginia high school coaches. To see the current coaches, click on each team name.
Most tournaments require their participants to be registered with US Lacrosse. With your US Lacrosse membership, each player becomes insured individually.

Playing for a club team provides an organized avenue through the recruiting process. We are pre-registered for all tournaments well in advance. It also provides the opportunity to meet new people and to be coached by current and former collegiate athletes.
Playing for SuperNoVA Select is a big commitment. It is not feasible for a player to make the commitment we require AND play for another club team. A strict partiipation policy has been instituted for the 2015/2016 season. Missing multiple practices and/or tournaments will jeopardize a players position on the team, result in lack of playing time, and the player will not be allowed to tryout out the following year.

For the 2016/2017 season (summer and fall), the team fee for the classes of 2018, 2019, & 2020 is $1400 per player . The team fee covers field and facility rentals, team website maintenance, reversible jersey, spirit pack, tournament fees for 6 tournaments (4 summer & 2 fall) coaching at practices and tournaments, certified athletic trainer at all practices, guest speakers (sport psychology and/or nutrition), use of SuperNoVa staff as college references and end of the summer individual evaluation.
For the classes of 2021, 2022 & 2023 the team fee is $900 per player and includes everything above except the tournament fees. Players will pay separately for the tournaments they attend.
All Siblings will pay a fee of $600.
The Team Fee will be broken down into 3 payments.
The team fee DOES NOT include: hotel arrangements or travel expenses to tournaments.
We try to remain fair with equal playing time for all players. However, we do take into account consistent attendance at practices in addition to the work ethic and the attitude of each player.
The number of teams we form depends on the number of players who try out each year and their ages. For the 2015/2016 season, we formed 6 teams: 2017 Orange, 2018 Blue, 2018 Black, 2019 Gold, 2020 Silver, 2021/2022 White. SuperNoVa Select reserves the right to form teams that are made up of combined graduation years and/or that are made up of one single graduation year.
There will be approximately 18-25 practices between April and November.
Practice dates are usually dictated by field availability. Summer practices run from May - July and occur on both weekends and weekdays. Week night practices typically fall on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fall practices will fall on Saturdays or Sundays. We avoid week day practices during the school year.
Practices are held at George Mason University in Fairfax. Alternate practice sites have included the Word of Grace facility (Old Redskins Park) off Rt. 28 and Marymount University in Arlington.
We provide a certified trainer at every practice.
Usually we participate in 4 tournaments over the summer and 2 in the fall. Past tournaments include Top of the Bay, Charm City, All Star Express, Gatorfest, Upper Atlantic Tournament, Champion's Cup, All American Capital Cup, Club National Chamionships, Rivalry Challenge and Mid Atlantic Tournament. Most tournaments that we attend are in MD, PA or VA.
We try to choose tournaments that do not involve a great deal of travel time or expense. We also take into consideration the cost of the tournament along with the quality of the facility where the tournament is held. Finally, we choose tournaments where players will get quality exposure to the college recruiters.
