Frequently Asked Questions

What is SuperNoVa Select?

SuperNoVa Select is a traveling girls lacrosse club. Liz Schaffner, former 10 year Assistant Coach at George Mason University, created SuperNoVa Select in an effort to foster the growth of girls lacrosse in Northern Virginia while helping high school players gain exposure to the college recruiters.

How do I get on the team?

There will be a tryout for all players at the beginning of every season (usually the end of February or beginning of March). Players are evaluated on their athleticism, lacrosse skills and coachability.

Who coaches the SuperNoVA Select Team?
As the director of the SuperNoVa Select program, Liz takes on all the administrative duties while also overseeing the progress of the athletes at the practices as well as the tournaments. Liz attends each practice and tournament in which SuperNoVa participates. Each team will have a head coach and an assistant coach. The head coaches are local Northern Virginia high school coaches and the assistants are current or former college players. To see the current coaches, click on each team name.
Why do I need to be a member of US Lacrosse?
Most tournaments require their participants to be registered with US Lacrosse. With your US Lacrosse membership, each player becomes insured individually.
How do I register with US Lacrosse?
Go to www.uslacrosse.org
What is the advantage of playing for SuperNoVa Select versus playing for my high school team?
Playing for a club team provides an organized avenue through the recruiting process. We are pre-registered for all tournaments well in advance. It also provides the opportunity to meet new people and to be coached by current and former collegiate athletes.
Why are the teams organized by high school graduation year?
Because most of the tournaments are geared towards the college recruiters, teams are divided up by graduation year. Many of the tournaments do not allow players to play "up or down." This makes it easier for the college coaches to know what recruiting class they are watching at each tournament. The SuperNoVa coaches and staff do, however, have the authority to combine graduation years as needed.
If I make the SuperNoVa team, can I play for another club team as well?
While we don't want to limit the opportunity of a SuperNoVa Select player, we strongly recommend that players play for one club team at a time. We expect if a player accepts the invite to be a part of our club that they are making a full commitment to attend all of our club events for one full season.
Who do I contact if I still have questions?

How do the players get to the various tournaments?

Travel and hotel arrangements are the responsibility of each player and their family. Hotel blocks will be secured by Liz for some tournaments, however, players are not required to stay in the team hotel.  Supervision of athletes while traveling is the responsibility of each individual family.

How much does it cost to be on the team?

The team fee for the classes of 2011 and 2012 is $1175 per player . The team fee covers field and facility rentals, access to team website, practice reversible, tournament uniform, tournament fees for three (3) mandatory summer tournaments, coaching at practices and tournaments, NCAA recruiting talk, spirit pack, use of SuperNoVa staff as college references and end of the summer individual evaluation. For the classes of 2013 & 2014, the team fee is $775 per player and includes everything above except the 3 mandatory tournament fees. The team fee DOES NOT include: tournament fees (unless otherwise specified), hotel arrangements or travel expenses to tournaments. Siblings are $400 but the fee does NOT include tournament or travel fees.

Does each player get equal playing time at the tournaments?
We try to remain fair with equal playing time for all players. However, we do take into account consistent attendance at practices in addition to the work ethic and the attitude of each player.
How many teams are there?
We have four high school teams: one senior team, one junior team, one sophomore team and one freshman team. We do not have middle school teams.
How many practices do you have per year?
There will be approximately 15-18 practices between May and November.
On what days are practices held?

2010 summer practices will be held primarily during the week with a few practices falling on Sunday afternoons.  Some weeks each team will have 2 practices per week and some weeks there will be only 1 practice per team.  Practices will be scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.

Where are practices held?

Practices will be held at the Word of Grace facility (Old Redskins Park) off Rt. 28 and Marymount University in Arlington.

What happens if I get hurt at practice? Is there a trainer?
We provide a certified trainer at every practice.
How many tournaments does SuperNoVa Select participate in?

Usually we participate in 4 tournaments over the summer and 3 in the fall. Past tournaments include Top of the Bay, Charm City, All Star Express, Gatorfest, Upper Atlantic Tournament, Champion's Cup, All American Capital Cup. Most tournaments that we attend are in MD, PA or VA.

How do you choose which tournaments to play in?
We try to choose tournaments that do not involve a great deal of travel time or expense. We also take into consideration the cost of the tournament along with the quality of the facility where the tournament is held. Finally, we choose tournaments where players will get quality exposure to the college recruiters.
Which tournaments are mandatory for the White and Orange teams?

The mandatory tournaments for the White Team (2011) are :  Champions Cup, Capitol Cup and Club National Championships.  The mandatory tournaments for the Orange Team (2012) are Champions Cup, Capitol Cup and Lax for the Cure.   These tournament fees are included in the team fee however, travel and hotel expenses are NOT included.

*It is HIGHLY recommended that members of the Orange Team make every effort to attend the Club National Championships even though it is not a mandatory tournament.
